Student Readmitted Following Intervention by the Commission

A student has been readmitted to Lamaek High School in Uasin Gishu County after the Ombudsman intervened in a case of administrative injustice.

The student's mother complained to the Commission after her daughter, a Form 3 student, was unlawfully suspended and subsequently expelled by the school Principal. This action was taken despite the mother having received prior approval for a three-week absence. The mother had requested the absence so her daughter could assist in caring for her son, another student at the school, who was hospitalized at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for a month following an accident on or around January 19, 2025.

However, when the daughter returned to school after the approved three weeks, the Principal refused her readmission. Instead, he suspended her citing absenteeism, missed academic days, and missed exams – even though he had originally granted the absence request. When the mother sought an explanation, the Principal stated he "does not want her in the school" and directed the mother to find another school.

The mother then appealed to the Ainabkoi Sub-County Director of Education. Follow-up attempts revealed the daughter would still not be readmitted. Consequently, the daughter missed the entire beginning of the Second Term, prompting the mother to seek help from the Commission.

The Commission took up the matter with the Uasin Gishu County Director of Education on June 4, 2025. By June 5, 2025, the County Director confirmed the Principal had been summoned and directed to readmit the student. The parent confirmed the student has since returned to school. Additionally, the Principal has been issued a warning letter regarding the incident.
