Eleven Years Salary Arrears Paid

“I want to thank you for compelling the Teachers Service Commission to pay me 135 months’ salary arrears,” said Mr. Aspel Makau, in an email to the Commission.

Mr. Makau complained to the Commission alleging delay by the TSC to pay his salary arrears. Mr. Makau alleged failure by TSC to settle his complaint on unpaid November 2018 salary dues whilst he was on interdiction pending the conclusion of his disciplinary case. According to him, he has been a teacher attached to Koiluget Secondary School, Nandi County, since 15th March 2018, and before his posting to the school, he was interdicted from the service between 1st June 2006 and 7th March 2018 whilst awaiting the determination of his disciplinary case which was pending before TSC. Upon the conclusion of his disciplinary case, his interdiction was lifted and he was reinstated to the service and he was to be paid his dues for the days he worked subject to confirmation by the TSC County Director, Nandi County.

In November 2018, his salary was not paid as the same was inadvertently sent to the wrong account. On following up with TSC, he was promised that the salary for November 2018 would be followed up with his bank and that the arrears would be processed and paid by January 2022. However, that was not done which impelled him to seek the intervention of the Commission in June 2022.

The Commission by way of inquiry took up the matter with the TSC. The TSC indicated that they were carrying out internal investigations to ascertain whether the teacher was working during the period of his interdiction to warrant the payment of his salary arrears and that on the unpaid salary for November 2018, the TSC’s Accounts Unit had written to the bank to find out where the salary was dispatched to and promised to update the Commission on the same.

Following further follow-ups with the Commission, Mr. Makau was paid his November 2018 salary and the arrears for the 135 months when he was on interdiction.
