Five winners of the Huduma Ombudsman Awards, 2017, were feted by His Excellency the President, Hon Uhuru Kenyatta, during the 55th Jamhuri Day Celebrations held on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. The awardees were recognised following their nomination by the Commission.
The 2017 overall winner in the individual category, Mr. David Kipng’eno Chumo, was awarded with The Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW). Mr. Chumo was awarded by the Commission for upholding integrity in public service, selflessness and going beyond the call of duty to promote the rule of law.
Ms. Onyango Olivia Achieng Obell, the Head of HIV/AIDS Control Unit at the Kenya Prisons, and who emerged first runner- up in the individual category, has been awarded with The Head of States Commendation (HSC) Civilian Division. Ms. Obell was rewarded by the Commission for transformative leadership, innovation and exemplary work in the Kenya's correctional facilities.
Others who were awarded by the President include; the second -runner up, Ms. Jennifer Wangari, who is a Chief Children’s Officer at the Ministry of State Department of Social Protection, and Mr. Erick Nicholas Ngondi, an environmental officer at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), who have been awarded with the Head of States Commendation (HSC) in the civilian category.
The Narok County Commissioner, Mr. George Natembeya, whom the Commission recognised for providing leadership, excellent service delivery and promoting participation in management of public affairs, was also awarded with the Third Class: Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS).
Huduma Ombudsman Awards is an initiative of the Commission that seeks to reward outstanding public officers and institutions, and celebrate excellence in service delivery. The 2017 Huduma Ombudsman Award ceremony was held on 9 March 2017.
